Year 2
In the first semester, students may choose between modules MAT431 and MAT432, which differ in size and aims. Both devote a considerable amount of time to Fourier's analysis, which plays a fundamental role in all the physical sciences, for their theoretical and experimental aspect, and in many areas of fundamental and applied mathematics (signal theory, probabilities, etc.).
The MAT431module also covers various aspects of differential calculus, including the theory of differential equations, where emphasis is placed on the qualitative, geometric and dynamic aspects of the theory. Finally, Fourier's analysis is presented within the modern context of the distribution theory. The module thus offers a basic mathematical training in analysis and geometry.
In the second semester, modules MAT451 and MAT452 cover themes in which the intervention of algebra is decisive. They respectively introduce the Galois group associated with an algebraic equation and the Poincaré group associated with a topological space.
Mathematics tuition at Ecole Polytechnique: Year 2
- Distribution, Fourier's Analysis and Dynamic Systems (MAT431) (C. Viterbo F. Golse) (teaching materials)
- Topology and functions of a complex variable (MAT452) (J. Lannes)
